I don’t have a solution to our traffic and parking situation. As my friend Bill Cannon explains it, “We have a four lane expressway leading to a cul-de-sac.” With 2,500 parking spaces and 10,000 cars, there is simply not enough room for everyone.
We currently have the emergency lane functioning on high traffic weekends, and we post information on lighted traffic information signs and social media when parking lots are full and traffic is backed up. While it is appealing to be able to turn non-resident traffic around at Johnny Mercer, Hwy 80 is a Federal Highway and Tybee is a public beach, and that’s probably not going to happen.
I have heard hundreds of suggestions and few/zero legal or viable solutions. I like the recent DOT plans for Hwy 80 from the Bull River to Lazaretto Creek and from Lazaretto Creek to Tybrisa. I’d like to see these finalized and implemented. I think they will help.
